Designer: Alexander Girard
Simple but sharply defined, the diagonal motif in this design by Alexander Girard brings movement and bold color into any space. The canvas print is part of a series of decorative panels Girard developed in 1972 to enhance Herman Miller’s Action Office furniture system. An archival reissue of the 23-by-76-inch original, the canvas print is 1.5-inches deep and comes pre-mounted so it’s easy to hang. Mounting hardware is included.
Alexander Girard believed that design should bring beauty, fun, and sensuality to our world. Asked to add an element of “aesthetic functionalism” to Herman Miller’s Action Office, the very first open-plan furniture system, Girard developed 40 decorative silkscreen designs. Unlike Girard’s usual printed textiles, the fabric panels featured single stand-alone images that varied from figurative pictograms to abstract designs. Dynamic, lively in color, and large in scale, they were the perfect way to deliver a sense of joy to a space—then and now.
