Jesse Brody – The Man Behind the Design

Jesse Brody is owner of CA Modern Home, an upscale, contemporary furniture store on Miami Beach that carries designer lines such as Herman Miller, Vitra, Kartell, Louis Poulsen, Artemide, Flos, Tom Dixon, Magis, and more. Catering to both local and international clients, CA Modern Home also offers a wide array of home accessories and lighting. He is also a designer.

A native of Miami Beach, Brody was strongly influenced by its Art Deco style which permeates much of the city’s architecture—from swank hotels to popular restaurants. The style’s use of tropical colors and angular, geometric forms has provided an inspiration for the choice of furniture pieces and accessories at his store. Mr. Brody’s artist mother, Sherna, who is an antique dealer as well as taught painting as one of the first female teachers at Miami Dade in the 60's, was another driving force behind his turning his love for design into a profitable business.

Brody’s artistic style can be described as taking simple raw materials and extracting their beauty to produce unique pieces. He says: “I often like to work with common and mundane materials, such as copper, hot-rolled steel, and aluminum to make pieces that are so beautiful and made with such precision that people say ‘wow!’”

He states that typically he does not paint his products as to avoid masking the materials inherent beauty. “When creating works of art, I integrate my background in sculpture, jewelry making, and industrial design to produce products truly worthy of their existence. My feeling is, why not surround yourself with items that you have carefully crafted and will keep for the rest of your life. That, I believe, is the real definition of an heirloom,” he adds.

His style and professional focus have been the culmination of his traveling the world and studying different artistic techniques, which he has incorporated in his drawings, sculptures, jewelry, furniture, and lighting. He began purchasing Art Deco and Mid-Century modern lamps and furniture, restoring and then selling them to friends and colleagues.

From there came the brainchild to open CA Modern Home in 2002 as a way of bringing contemporary, modern furnishings and home accessories to a clientele seeking unusual and innovative design, but with a timeless feel.

Long term, Brody hopes to continue growing his personal brand and to teach. He therefore prefers to stay boutique-sized and to build his reputation of product knowledge, thereby maintaining a level of customer service that larger chains cannot provide. He personally services clients at the store daily—advising and educating them on the investment pieces they are purchasing to ensure their needs are met. He also continues to travel and attend Design shows and exhibitions, from New York to Milan, looking for the best designs.
