When a truly amazing product is released, chances are there will eventually be a similar product manufactured that looks almost identical to the original, albeit with slight variations to try and avoid legal headaches. Husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames created numerous pieces that moved the modern design furniture industry forward and sure enough, the couple’s work is being potentially imitated.
Among their many iconic works, the Eames Chair remains a timeless piece with an asking price of $400+. However, a major supermarket chain is finding itself in a bit of hot water due to a product being sold for about $58: a molded plastic chair that bears a striking resemblance to the Eames Chair. This begs the question: if you cannot afford to buy the original, is it okay to buy a replica?
Though the supermarket chain says it’s not infringing on any design rights, it’s important to remember that replicas do not carry the same level of craftsmanship, quality, heritage, integrity, and return on investment as the original, in this case an Eames original. The phrase “you get what you pay for” works very well when dealing with modern furniture pieces.
