Home Design Tips: Common Mistakes When It Comes to Designing a Small Space

    September 09, 2015

Regardless of what type of modern design furniture you may be using, one thing that you’re always going to be limited by is space. Depending on how much or how little of it you may have available, this plays a major role in determining your overall layout, the look and ultimately how comfortable you’re going to feel in this space. In this case, we’ll be focusing on making sure you use small space wisely.

The first tip is perhaps the most obvious yet often overlooked: don’t purchase modern home furniture that’s too large for the space in question. Choosing something that’s too large will throw off whatever balance you may have been aiming for. You may wish to consider consolidating, such as using a bed that has storage spaces or an ottoman that will provide multifunctional use and thus remove the need to buy extra pieces that may ultimately be unnecessary.

Another item to consider is not using dividers that give off the illusion of multiple spaces. This will only serve to fill up the already limited amount of space and may even make you or your guests feel unnecessarily cramped. Think of your space as just one large space instead of multiple rooms that should be broken up.

Finally, you may wish to consider becoming best friends with corners. A reading nook at the edge of whatever space you’re using, corner shelves for small items like toiletries can help tremendously with small rooms. Should you decide to use curtains extending up to the ceiling will also give the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is.
