Design Charles & Ray Eames®
Molded fiberglass, metal legs
Made by Herman Miller®
The Eames Stools represent the evolution of Charles and Ray Eames’ iterative process, which continually pushed the boundaries of what a single-shell chair could be. The familiar form of the Eames Molded Fiberglass shell sits atop a 4-leg base design that makes it an ideal seating option at bar- or counter-height surfaces. Available in a choice of archival colors, the fiberglass shell can also be upholstered in an array of finely tailored Hopsak fabrics, designed by Alexander Girard. Counter height stool has a seat height of 25 inches, and the bar height stool seat height is 29.5 inches.
Like the original 1950 Molded Fiberglass Chair, the surface of the of the Eames Molded Fiberglass Stool features the same surface striation that has made the original chairs a covetable find for vintage collectors for decades. The process for making shells and the nature of fiberglass give each shell unique character traits that may include some surface cavities, areas of lighter or darker color, or faint circular shadows where stool base is attached to shell. Thanks to advances in safe fiberglass composition, the Eameses' distinctive single-shell form is safely produced by means of a less volatile, monomer-free “dry bind” process.
Like the countless fiberglass shells that have been beloved by avid Eames collectors and design enthusiasts for years, we expect our newly formulated Eames Molded Fiberglass Stool to endure for generations to come. However, in the off chance your stool is compromised, Herman Miller's Take Back program offers an environmentally sound means for recycling it.
The molded fiberglass shell is available in an array of archival colors and several upholstery options. It sits atop a 4-leg base in bar or counter heights available in several finishes.
An array of trim, finely tailored Hopsak fabrics designed by Alexander Girard, Herman Miller's Textile Director from 1952 to 1973, fully restore the integrity of the original 1953 shell chair offerings. Reproduced as faithfully as possible to Girard's original weave and color selections, the textile boasts one enhancement: it now uses more sustainable constructions and materials such as antimony-free polyester. Additional textile choices round out the collection of shell customization options.
To create preforms for the Eames Molded Fiberglass Stools, a "dry binder process" is used. With this technique, fiberglass strands, some of which melt at a lower temperature, are blown by a robot onto a screen in the shape of the chair shell. Heat is then applied, and enough strands melt so that the preform's shape remains intact, avoiding the harmful "wet glue" process used in traditional fiberglass fabrication.
Dimensions: 18.75" w | 21.5" d | 40.5" h | seat: 26.25" h
