Design Hans Wegner, 1950
Hardwood, paper cord seat
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son
The CH23 chair was one of the first five pieces Wegner created exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn. After decades out of production, the CH23 has been introduced to the world again.
The CH23, which is produced in exact accordance with Hans J. Wegner's original hand drawing, is a simple chair notable for its fine, well-known Wegner details: elegant cruciform cover caps on the form-pressed veneer backrest, a double-woven paper cord seat, and rear legs that are arched to maximize stability - all examples of the master designer's sense of refined craftsmanship.
The CH23 dining chair was one of the first chairs Hans J. Wegner designed for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950. The first masterpieces he created were not only unique, but also set new standards for modern furniture design with their lightness, artistic expression and ergonomic forms. Although the CH23 chair may appear uncomplicated at first glance, it incorporates many fine, sophisticated details, among them the elegant cruciform cover caps in the backrest, a unique hand-woven seat and backward arching rear legs that ensure optimal stability. Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched the CH23 in 2017, true to Wegner’s original working drawing, making the early masterpiece part of the collection once again.
