Product description
The Artemide Tizio Table Lamp is an icon of Italian industrial design, combining precision engineering, remarkable adjustability, and a radically clean approach to task lighting. Designed by Richard Sapper in 1972, Tizio challenged the conventional desk lamp by eliminating visible wiring from its articulated arms and using the structure itself to conduct electricity to the light source.
The defining feature of Tizio is its system of perfectly balanced counterweighted arms. Rather than relying on tightening knobs or conventional springs, the lamp moves smoothly with a simple push or pull and remains exactly where it is positioned. This allows the light to be brought close to a work surface, extended across a desk, raised for broader illumination, or redirected as needs change.
Electricity travels through the lamp’s aluminum arms, allowing the structure to remain visually clean without exposed cables running between its joints. Chromed steel spacer bars, molded thermoplastic insulators, die-cast zinc alloy counterweights, and an adjustable aluminum head give the lamp its unmistakable technical character while every visible element serves a functional purpose.
The compact reflector concentrates light directly onto the working area rather than flooding the entire room, making Tizio especially effective for reading, writing, drawing, studying, and detailed desk work. Its articulated design also makes it useful in home offices, executive workspaces, bedrooms, libraries, studios, and other interiors where precise light positioning is important.
Tizio is available in several proportions. The Tizio Micro is approximately 40% smaller than the Classic and works particularly well on compact desks and bedside tables. The Tizio 35 is approximately 20% smaller than the Classic, offering additional reach without requiring the full footprint of the original. The Tizio Classic provides the greatest extension and the unmistakable proportions associated with Sapper’s original design.
A Tizio Classic LED configuration brings the same counterbalanced architecture together with an integrated LED source. The North American LED model delivers warm 3000K illumination, includes on-base dimming, and retains the clean mechanical character that has defined Tizio for more than five decades.
Tizio has become much more than a functional task lamp. Its inventive use of counterweights, exposed structural components, and current-conducting arms helped establish it as a landmark of modern lighting design, and the lamp is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
