The Blue China rug is an abstract design made entirely by hand using two very different techniques. On the one hand, an innovative take on chain-stitching produces an embroidery-like texture; on the other hand, hand-tufting creates a smoother and more homogeneous surface with a higher pile.
GAN has developed their own system to translate chain-stitching into a rug-making technique. First, they draw the design they want to embroider on a cloth, which is attached to a wooden frame. Using this as a reference, and with a special crochet needle, the pattern is embroidered by hand with great sharpness.
The blue and white tones in the rug are chain-stitched, while the other areas are hand-tufted. It is a creation by GAN creative director, Mapi Millet, a round format of large dimensions. Blue China is made by hand with 100% virgin wool.
