Design George Nelson, 1952 Steel skeleton, self-webbing soft plastic, solid walnut Made in USA by Herman Miller
The Nelson Ball Wall Sconce is part of the Nelson Bubble Lamp series. A walnut wall mount and steel arm suspends the spherical shade and lets the lamp fill any interior with a warm, diffused light. The lamp’s arm can be adjusted from left to right and up and down without having to change its position on the wall.
Variations on an essentially spherical form, the Bubble Lamp series is a distinguished and timeless George Nelson design. The Nelson Ball Wall Sconce is designed with a swivel hinge and an adjustable plug-in cord, allowing easy movement of the lampshade without readjusting it on the wall. In 1952, a set of Swedish hanging lamps were introduced into the American market, and George Nelson was impressed enough to want one for his office. Their expensive price prevented him from buying one, but also inspired him to design his own. Soon after, a collection of pendant, sconce, tripod, table, and floor lamps was born.
The George Nelson Bubble Lamp® collection is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Herman Miller is the official site for the George Nelson Bubble Lamp® Collection.
