Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner is notable for his strong emphasis on organic functionality and the more than 450 unique chairs he created during his lifetime. Many of these chairs have gone on to be mass produced and are recognized as major icons of modern design furniture. One of the many notable pieces he created is the Wishbone Chair.
The Wishbone Chair was unveiled in 1949 and was a collaboration with Carl Hansen, well known for founding high end Danish furniture company Carl Hansen & Søn. The chair would go on to be mass produced in 1950 and is known for its steam bent back legs and back rail. Though joining the pieces proved difficult, the chair ended up being strong and lightweight. To this day, the iconic chair continues to be hand woven from paper cord and is well known for its comfort and durability.
The appeal of the Wishbone Chair is widespread and it remains just as relevant today as it did back in the 1950s. Former Saturday Night Live writer and current late night talk show host Seth Meyers has a trio of Wishbone chairs in his kitchen which was featured as part of an article on the website Remodelista.
