Charles and Ray Eames are often regarded as the first couple of modern design furniture, but there is another couple that also made significant contributions to the modern design movement but tend to go unnoticed. Alvar Aalto and Aino Marsio-Aalto are the pair largely responsible for the creation of Artek, the Finnish furniture company founded in 1935.
Alvar Aalto married his wife and fellow architect in 1925. During their honeymoon in Italy, the couple became heavily influenced by the Mediterranean region which would influence their work for years to come. Together they would go on to build a joint house-office in Helsinki and would later build a purpose-built house that today serves as a “house museum” and the home of the Alvar Aalto Academy.
Artek would became a major force in the Modernist movement and the untold legacy of the Aaltos is now being captured in a New York-based exhibition called Artek and the Aaltos: Creating a Modern World at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery on April 22nd.
The curator behind the Aalto exhibition is Nina Stritzler-Levine. You can read more about the exhibition and the curator’s insights in a Metropolis magazine interview at the following link: http://www.metropolismag.com/April-2016/The-First-Modern-Couple/.
