The Futuristic Design of Eero Saarinen

Finnish American architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen made his contributions to the advancement of modern design furniture with his unique neo-futuristic style that focused on arching curves intended to be simple yet sweeping.  As the son of acclaimed Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, Eero would go on to leave his mark in the industry.

Born on August 20, 1910 in Finland, Eero Saarinen and his family immigrated to the United States when he was thirteen, growing up in Michigan where his famous father taught at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Eero would take sculpture and furniture design classes at the school, where he would become classmates with fellow future modern design furniture pioneers Charles and Ray Eames and develop a close friendship with them as well as American architect and furniture designer Florence Knoll.  Saarinen traveled to Paris in the 1920s where he continued his sculpture studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière before heading back to the United States in 1934 to finish his schooling at the Yale School of Architecture.

In 1940, Saarinen collaborated with Charles Eames on a chair design to be entered in the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition.  The result would be the iconic, futuristic-looking Tulip that would win first place and establish Saarinen as a pioneer in modern furniture design.  Future projects included the Womb chair and ottoman and the “Grasshopper” lounge chair and ottoman.

CA Modern Home offers an extensive selection of modern home furniture by respected brands and designers like Eero Saarinen.  Call us at 1-800-605-1859 for any sales inquiries or more information
