Near the outskirts of the Florida International University (FIU) campus, modern design furniture company CA Modern Home’s owner and furniture designer Jesse Brody has been busy hammering, sawing, and sanding away in a studio that he’s using to teach students how to solder as part of a course introducing students to jewelry fabrication and small metals at FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts. The course is open to all students who wish to enroll regardless of their major.
The skills being taught in Brody’s course are designed to be multifaceted, and can be applied to a number of designs regardless of their scale, from a sculpture that stands a mere two inches to soaring buildings that stand multiple stories. Students get to work with materials like steel, silver, and copper to create a variety of items. For example, some students have made lotus flower sculptures while others may try making an outline of a face.
Students are also encouraged to build or bring their own materials and tools to the class, so that they’re ready to craft metal on their own once the class is over.
