Charles and Ray Eames are arguably the most fascinating couple associated with modern design furniture. Their extensive and highly regarded body of work has resulted in numerous homages and books written about them, including The World of Charles and Ray Eames by Catherine Ince and Lotte Johnson.
One of the topics covered in the book is Ray’s penchant, enthusiasm and affinity for entertaining, incorporating her artistic skills into her household duties including plumping pillows to making sure that candles burned to a specific length and her unique food arrangements which took into account factors like color coordination and composition. She also welcomed fellow modern design furniture pioneer Isamu Noguchi and his wife to her home as well as silent film comic actor Charlie Chaplin, creating unique experiences to welcome them.
The World of Charles and Ray Eames is the first comprehensive book focusing on the couple’s legacy in well over a decade, focusing extensively on their work which encompassed not only furniture but also film, architecture, photography, and more. The hardcover edition of the book is currently available for sale on Amazon.
